Kathryn Thompson, From Bel Air, MD, Volunteers in New Orleans During Winter Break

2017 Jan 31

Kathryn Thompson spent a week of the winter break volunteering in New Orleans. The students spent the week serving with the SBP, an organization founded in New Orleans driven to shrink the time between disaster and full recovery ?by ensuring that disaster-impacted citizens and communities recover in a prompt, efficient and predictable manner.

Christiana Jorgenson said "Being able to serve alongside friends to impact the lives of residents in New Orleans is an experience I will keep with me forever," after going on her first Mission: I'm Home trip.

Students who embarked on this week-long journey are members of Mission: I'm Home, a Stevenson University student organization dedicated to rebuilding homes destroyed by natural disasters.

Mission: I'm Home member and student leader Emma Ragon shared, "Mission: I'm Home has had a significant impact on my life. Not only do you build and rebuild homes for those affected by Hurricane Katrina, you build relationships. The connections I've made, skills I've learned, and events I've experienced are some of my fondest and most treasured memories as a member of the Stevenson community."

Not only did the students put up drywall, paint, and sand all week long, but got to meet local homeowners, visit museums, and see local attractions in order to learn about the culture and devastation that is present in New Orleans.
