Kayla Alvey From Rosedale, MD Spent Spring Break Helping Others

2017 Apr 27

Stevenson University Nursing major Kayla Alvey, was one of 30 students that traveled to Baton Rouge, Lousianna during their spring break. These students traveled as part of the on-campus alternative break program Mission: I'm Home.

Alvey and their fellow classmates spent an entire week in the city of Baton Rouge alongside the disaster relief and rehabilitation organization SBP.

Due to the extreme flooding that occurred in Baton Rouge last summer, SBP opened an affiliate office to help rebuild the damaged homes. The Stevenson students spent their time working in homes doing deconstruction, drywall, insulation, painting, and flooring.

One student participant reflected on the experience by sharing, "The most rewarding part of this trip was being able to see such a big difference in this house in only a week. Having the homeowners there was also so amazing because we truly got to see the impact our work has on their lives. Another very rewarding part was all the amazing connections we were able to create. Not only did I become closer to people I knew before the trip but I made some amazing new friends."

Thank you to Kayla, and all those who spent their spring break helping others!
