Nursing major Ashley Koepping of Crofton, MD Helped Rebuild Homes Destroyed by Hurricane Sandy

2015 Jul 9

Ashley Koepping was one of nine Stevenson University students who took a trip to Staten Island New York to help rebuild homes that were damaged and destroyed by hurricane Sandy in 2012. These students are members of the group Mission: I'm Home, an organization focused on rehabilitating damaged homes as an effort to help families return to their home, at Stevenson. During the last week in May, these students worked alongside the Episcopal Sandy Recovery Effort in Staten Island. The Episcopal Sandy Recovery Effort is a relief program that works to help those who suffered losses from hurricane Sandy, as well as rebuild homes across New York and New Jersey. By helping to rehabilitate homes that were devastated by the hurricane, Stevenson students bring hope back to families who will once again be able to return home.

Ashley says of her trip: "Rebuilding homes is much more than calluses, sweat, and endless showers trying to get clean. Rebuilding homes damaged by hurricanes is rebuilding a home in which a family has not been in for years. A home that once had memories made daily, but then were swiftly taken away by mother nature. Rebuilding these homes give the family hope that people out there still care about them, that people out there have not forgotten about them. It fills my heart with joy knowing that I am making a difference. Knowing that from the beginning of the week until the end I am helping a family move back into their home so that they can continue making memories, is the best feeling in the world. Rebuilding homes damaged by hurricanes has changed me as a person, and until I am no longer able to do so, I will continue to rebuild these homes until every family is back where they were."

Thank you for your commitment to service, Ashley!
