Stevenson University Women's Basketball Player Sara Tarbert from Delta, PA Brings Home the Title of Commonwealth Conference Champion.

2015 Mar 6

Sara is a member of the Stevenson University women's basketball team who helped achieve the title of Commonwealth Conference Champions. The Mustangs continued their outstanding season winning their first-ever conference title. With a score of 54-50 in an intense game against Albright they earned the automatic bid towards the 2105 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. This makes them the seventh different team in Stevenson history to reach the NCAA tournament.

The entire team put on a remarkable performance during the game, with Ty Bender achieving the title of Most Outstanding Player. Bender earned this honor after 27 points, six assists, seven rebounds and two steals during the tournament. Seniors Kayla Kelly and Kyarra Harmon highlighted the game against Albright with a double double. Kayleigh Guzek opened with a three-pointer on Stevenson's first possession, setting the stage in less than two minutes with a 7-0 lead.

After an excellent lead, and a first half of multiple turnovers and ties, the Mustang's fell short allowing Albright a two point lead at the half. Sara Tarbert, Kyarra Harmon, and Ty Bender all picked up their fourth fouls during the second half, followed by a free throw from Kayleigh Guzek tying the game 42-42. A three-point play by Kayla Kelly put the team into an eight point lead with less than three minutes to play. She reached her career-high with 11 rebounds. The Mustang's claimed victory over Albright with seconds left in the game, earning their title as champions.

The team will take on Williams College, at Montclair State University, for the first NCAA playoff game Friday, March 6 at 4pm!

Congratulations Sara and good luck on Friday!
